Rabat – Outrage has erupted following reports of 20 deaths attributed to extreme heat in Morocco.
Several reports indicated that the fatalities occurred within a 24-hour period at the regional hospital in Beni Mellal, sparking widespread concern.
In response to mounting public anxiety, the Ministry of Health issued a press release pledging measures to address the extreme heat.
However, the ministry did not confirm the fatalities reported.
“The Ministry of Health and Social Protection announces it has implemented a series of emergency measures to address the health effects resulting from the high heat wave currently affecting the country,” the ministry said today.
It further explained that shifts have been activated in healthcare facilities across regions experiencing high temperatures.
The ministry also urged citizens to take necessary precautions to prevent health risks associated with high temperatures, especially vulnerable groups such as children and pregnant women.
The ministry concluded its statement, calling on citizens to drink sufficient water to avoid dehydration and avoid going out during peak daytime hours with extreme heat.
Morocco has been experiencing high temperatures, especially in central provinces and the south.
Temperatures reached up to 46 degrees Celsius in some provinces, including Marrakech.
The ministry stressed that symptoms that may result from excessive heat exposure could include fever, paleness of the skin, cramps in the limbs and abdominal muscles, as well as weight loss, nausea, and headaches.
“In case of any of these symptoms , immediate medical attention at the nearest healthcare facility is advised,”.
