Rabat – Israel’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, has strongly criticized Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for recently signing a reconciliation deal with Hamas aimed at establishing an interim national government in Gaza after the ongoing war ends.
Katz took to social media platform X today to condemn Abbas for aligning with Hamas, which he described as “murderers and rapists.” “Instead of rejecting terrorism, Mahmoud Abbas embraces the murderers and rapists of Hamas, revealing his true face,” Katz posted.
He emphasized that a Palestinian rule over the Gaza Strip would never come to fruition, asserting that Hamas would be defeated and that Abbas would merely observe the besieged enclave from a distance.
“Israel’s security will remain solely in Israel’s hands,” he added.
A monumental reconciliation deal
The reconciliation agreement in question, involving Hamas, Fatah, and 12 other Palestinian groups, was finalized on Tuesday in China after three days of intensive negotiations.
The Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi hailed the accord as a significant step towards establishing an “interim national reconciliation government” to govern Gaza once the Israeli war ends, Reuters reported.
At a press conference in Beijing, senior Hamas official Moussa Abu Marzouk declared the signing of the agreement as a key moment. “Today we sign an agreement of national unity and we say that the path to completing this journey is national unity,” he said.
The deal outlines four main objectives, including establishing an interim national unity government, forming a unified Palestinian leadership ahead of future elections, conducting free elections for a new Palestinian National Council, and issuing a general declaration of unity against ongoing Israeli attacks.
The reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah is seen as a turning point in internal Palestinian relations. The two factions have been at odds since 2006, leading to Hamas seizing control of Gaza.
The new deal aims to bridge the deep divide and create a unified front for Palestinian governance.
As the talks of post-war Gaza continue, the reality for the thousands of Palestinians suffering in the besieged enclave is that the end of massacres by Israeli forces seems to be nowhere in sight. The Gaza health ministry recently announced that the death toll has reached a staggering 39,090, although British journal The Lancet predicts the true number to be closer to 186,000 once those still missing under the rubble are accounted for.
