Rabat – In a heart-wrenching turn of events, six-year-old Hikmat Raad Badir passed away today, as reported by Anadolu Agency, succumbing to severe malnutrition exacerbated by the relentless Israeli blockade on Gaza.
This tragic death underscores the escalating humanitarian crisis faced by the enclave’s residents, particularly its children.
Hikmat’s family, originally from northern Gaza, was forced to relocate to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in central Gaza, hoping to find the medical care and nutrition essential for the young boy’s survival.
“We sought refuge here, thinking we could get the necessary help,” Hikmat’s uncle, Ahmed Badir, told Anadolu Agency. “But even here, there is no proper food or treatment available for children. His condition worsened, and we lost him.”
Ahmed’s words highlight a grim reality: the malnutrition crisis in Gaza is not limited to children alone. Adults are also enduring severe hardships due to the ongoing conflict and blockade.
Husam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, recently disclosed the dire extent of the crisis.
“Last month, we recorded the deaths of four children due to severe malnutrition,” he reported. “In just two weeks, we saw over 250 cases of child malnutrition. Gaza is facing a real health catastrophe that begins with our children but could soon encompass everyone.”
The humanitarian situation in Gaza has deteriorated rapidly. The health system is on the brink of collapse under the strain of continuous Israeli military operations and a stringent blockade.
This dire scenario persists despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire — an order Israel has yet to heed.
Since the escalation of violence on October 7, 2023, the toll has been devastating. Local health authorities report nearly 38,193 Palestinian deaths, predominantly being women and children, with over 87,900 injuries.
The blockade has left vast areas of Gaza in ruins, crippling access to essential supplies like food, clean water, and medicine.
The international community continues tovoice condemnation, accusing Israel of severe human rights violations.
The International Court of Justice has accused Israel of genocide and recently ordered an immediate halt to military operations in the southern city of Rafah, where over a million Palestinians had sought refuge before the city’s invasion on May 6.
