Rabat – Leila Benali, Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, participated in a roundtable on water security in London on Friday, chaired by Baroness Chapman.
During the session, Minister Benali emphasized Morocco’s commitment to sustainable development under the leadership of King Mohammed VI. “Sustainable development is a strategic choice under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI,” she noted, highlighting key initiatives like the water highways designed to enhance the country’s water resource management.
“The issue of water and its preservation is at the heart of Morocco’s development strategy,” she stated, referencing the country’s efforts to improve water management, including the implementation of water highways.
Minister Benali also acknowledged Morocco’s vulnerability to drought risks, exacerbated by climate change. “Continuous action is needed to ensure water security,” she asserted, emphasizing the importance of long-term investment in water management infrastructure.
She further outlined the New Development Plan, which prioritizes sustainable development by balancing economic growth with environmental preservation. Morocco’s proactive measures to manage its water resources are integral to this plan, with water security at its core.
The minister also underlined Morocco’s key role in the fight against climate change, noting the country’s pioneering actions in both the African and international contexts.
Morocco was the only North African country invited to the event, organized by the NGO WaterAid under the patronage of King Charles III.Â
