Rabat – The Moroccan Royal Football Federation (FRMF) has announced receiving a verdict from the CAF Club Committee regarding the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup semi-final clash between RS Berkane and Algerian side USM Alger.
In a statement, FRMF confirmed that USM Alger suffered a 3-0 defeat in the match against RS Berkane.
This means that the Moroccan club has qualified for the tournament’s final where they will lock horns with Egyptian club Zamalek. The first leg game will take place in Berkane on May 12, while the second leg match will take place in Cairo on May 19.
FRMF noted that the CAF club committee convened on Wednesday, ultimately reaching a unanimous decision regarding the game.
The statement added that the match’s file has been referred to the disciplinary committee for potential further punitive actions following RS Berkane jersey controversy.
The saga began when the Moroccan club traveled to Algeria for the first leg of their semi-final match against USM Alger. Upon arrival, Algerian authorities confiscated RS Berkane’s equipment, particularly their jerseys, because they displayed Morocco’s full map.
This caused tension and ultimately led to the abandonment of the match as RS Berkane was unable to play without their equipment.
Despite efforts by CAF to resolve the issue and affirm the legitimacy of RS Berkane’s jerseys, the Algerian authorities refused to return the confiscated items.
This resulted in the match being canceled and a series of subsequent disciplinary actions against USM Alger and the Algerian Football Federation, including declaring RS Berkane as winners with a 3-0 score.
In the second leg, which was supposed to take place in Morocco, USM Alger arrived but decided to pull out of the match. As a result, CAF penalized the Algerian club with a forfeit, awarding RS Berkane a 3-0 victory by default.
