Rabat – Sierra Leone has reiterated its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the only credible, serious, and realistic solution to the Western Sahara dispute.
The West African country renewed its support for the Moroccan initiative during a joint statement issued following talks between Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita and his Sierra Leonean counterpart Timothy Musa Kabba.
In the joint communique, Kabba reiterated his country’s firm support for Morocco’s territorial integrity reinforced by the opening of a consulate general of Sierra Leone in Dakhla in 2021.
The improvement of bilateral ties between the two countries is also attributed to Sierra Leone’s participation in the Ministerial Conference in support of the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty at the invitation of Morocco and the US in January in 2021.
During his meeting with Bourita, the official also expressed support for the UN-led political process seeking to achieve a realistic, practical, and lasting solution to the Sahara dispute.
The past two weeks have been marked by a series of meetings between Bourita and several officials from African and Caribbean countries.
The latest meeting was with Dominica, which also renewed its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity on Monday.
Dominica’s Foreign Affairs Minister Vince Henderson emphasized his country’s position in a joint statement yesterday following talks with Bourita in Rabat.
He also emphasized that his country views Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the “only credible, serious, and realistic solution” to the dispute.
Several other countries, including Saint Kitts and Nevis and Liberia, echoed the same sentiment recently, reaffirming support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.
The countries have notably welcomed Morocco’s commendable development efforts in the southern provinces and stressed their commitment to further cementing their ties with the North African country as part of the South-South cooperation momentum.
