Rabat – Morocco’s aeronautic industry started 2024 on a positive note, with the sector’s exports growing by 23% at the end of January 2024.
According to a monthly update from the country’s foreign trade watchdog, Office Exchange (OE), aeronautic exports reached over MAD 1.9 billion ($188 million) in the first month of 2024.
The positive momentum is primarily supported by the rise in exports of the assembly sub-industry, which totaled MAD 1.23 billion ($122 million), up 35% year-on-year.
Meanwhile, the EWIS (Electrical Wiring Interconnection System) sub-industry exported MAD 646 million ($64 million), up 5% compared to the previous year.
Morocco’s aeronautic industry has received a boost from government policies aiming to transform the country into a regional manufacturing hub. Observers have noted that the country has strong potential to emerge as a continental powerhouse in the sector.
As part of a number of national strategies, the country has heavily invested in its aerospace infrastructure, workforce development, and global partnerships to position itself as a hub for aviation manufacturing.
The country’s favorable geographic location at the crossroads of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East has allowed it to serve as a pivotal hub for regional and international aviation, several reports have noted.
The recent establishment of aerospace industry clusters, such as the Midparc Free Zone near Casablanca, has further consolidated the nation’s aviation infrastructure.
To meet the demands of the aerospace sector, Morocco has prioritized the development of a skilled workforce. The Moroccan Aerospace Institute and other specialized training centers have been established to produce a pool of highly skilled professionals, ensuring the industry’s sustainability.
The country has also forged strong partnerships with renowned aerospace companies like Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier, and Safran. These collaborations have not only facilitated technology transfer, but have also enhanced the overall competitiveness of Morocco’s aerospace sector.
Parallel to its manufacturing ambitions, Morocco has made significant strides in aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services. The Technopark in Casablanca and Tangier Aerospace City are prime examples of Moroccan facilities catering to MRO companies, providing an ideal environment for operators to conduct maintenance services.
