Rabat – Following his official visit to Rabat on Wednesday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has reiterated his country’s stance of support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as the “most serious, realistic, and credible basis for resolving the Sahara dispute.”

The prime minister reaffirmed Spain’s unchanged position during a press conference, echoing sentiments expressed in the Joint Declaration of April 2022, stating that Spain “confirms its support” for the Moroccan autonomy plan.

“The Spanish government reaffirms the Joint Declaration approved in 2022. In this declaration, which we endorsed during last year’s high-level meeting between the governments of Morocco and Spain, my position on what the international community’s approach should be regarding the Western Sahara is clearly outlined,” Sanchez stated.

He continued: “therefore, we reaffirm the roadmap established in 2022 and our commitment to a solution based on realistic foundations.”

Earlier, a statement from the Royal Cabinet indicated Spain’s reaffirmation of its support  during the audience granted by King Mohammed VI to the Spanish prime minister.

Discussions during the Royal audience and the subsequent press conference with the Spanish prime minister  also touched upon enhancing bilateral cooperation in various fields, including the joint organization of the 2030 FIFA World Cup by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal.

Prime Minister Sanchez told the media that his discussions with Moroccan authorities, including his counterpart Aziz Akhannouch, addressed migration issues. Sanchez  praised the “exemplary cooperation” between the two countries in managing migration flows and combating irregular migration.

Regarding the joint hosting of the 2030 World Cup, the prime minister highlighted the significant investment opportunities it would present for Spanish companies in “all areas related to infrastructure by 2030.”
