Rabat – Police at the Casablanca Mohammed VI International Airport today arrested two Canadian nationals for their alleged involvement in an international drug trafficking case.
Police arrested the suspects, aged 19 and 32, upon arrival on a flight from Toronto.
A security source said a routine security check led to the discovery of nearly 134 kilograms of marijuana hidden in their luggage.
Police put the suspects in custody pending a judicial investigation to determine the international connection of the case.
This comes as Morocco has in recent years continued to pledge to strengthen efforts to battle drug trafficking domestically and regionally.
The country has succeeded in foiling several major drug trafficking operations across the country.
Police’s annual report last year said security services processed 92,346 drug-trafficking-related cases, arresting 119,692 individuals, including 287 foreigners.
Police also seized 123 tons and 971 kilograms of cannabis resin, 1.948 tons of cocaine, and 16.53 kilograms of heroin, in addition to over 1 million psychotropic substances.
