Morocco is expected to play a friendly game against Uruguay in March, Spanish news outlet El Pais reported earlier today.
In its report, El Pais quoted Uruguay national team coach Marcelo Alberto Bielsa Caldera citing Morocco as a potential opponent for Uruguay in a friendly game expected in March.
Caldera is also the coach of Uruguay’s U23 national team
“It is either China, the destination, or it is the Basque Country and Morocco,” he said in a press conference on Thursday.
Caldera made his remarks following the U23 Uruguay team’s match against Argentina.
The remarks came in response to the question of whether some members of the Uruguay youth national team will make their debut in the main national team.
If the news is confirmed, this will be the first friendly game for the Atlas Lions following their disappointing journey at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Despite being tipped as overwhelming favorites to win this year’s AFCON by most African football observers, Morocco’s Alas Lions were stunned by a 2-0 loss to South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in the round of 16.
The early exit from the continental showpiece was heartbreaking for Moroccan fans, as many had hoped that the Atlas Lions would end Morocco’s long wait for continental glory after their commanding and historic performance at the Qatar World Cup.
