Rabat – GenZ 212, one of the viral youth-led movements leading demonstrations in Morocco, has urged Moroccans to uphold peaceful approaches during protests.

In a statement today, the movement distanced itself from the riots and vandalism ongoing in several regions amid widespread calls for protests aiming at reforms to enhance the healthcare and education sectors.

The movement said it regrets seeing rioting and vandalism, which it said could be exploited to tarnish the just demands the movement seeks.

“The movement expresses regret over some acts of vandalism or destruction affecting public or private property and calls on all participants to fully adhere to peaceful methods, and avoid any behavior that could be exploited to undermine our legitimate demands,” the statement reads.

Gez Z 212 issued the statement after several videos showed overturned police vehicles, stones everywhere, and fire set in the middle of streets, including in the Souss-Massa region.

In addition, the movement also urged authorities to release protesters, including those who participated in today’s demonstrations.

“The movement also denounces the hefty fines, which in some cases reached 6,000 dirhams, imposed simply for citizens communicating with the press and exercising their legitimate right to free expression,” the statement added.
