Rabat – The president of the Egyptian Football Association, Hany Abo Rida, has submitted an official proposal to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) calling for an expansion of the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.
According to the Egyptian Football Association, the request comes in light of the historic achievements of African national teams at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where several countries delivered standout performances and highlighted the growing strength of African football on the global stage.
Abo Rida’s proposal asks CAF to award each member association one additional place in both club competitions. The extra spots would be allocated according to CAF’s existing ranking system and competition regulations.
If approved, some of Africa’s highest-ranked football associations could be represented by up to three clubs in both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup. The additional teams would enter the tournaments through the preliminary qualifying rounds.
The proposal could have a major impact on Egyptian football. Under the current qualification system, Al Ahly SC is set to compete in the CAF Confederation Cup after finishing third in the Egyptian Premier League, while Zamalek SC and Pyramids FC will represent Egypt in the CAF Champions League.
However, if CAF accepts the proposal, Al Ahly would also qualify for the Champions League alongside Zamalek and Pyramids, giving Egypt three representatives in Africa’s premier club competition.
The Egyptian Football Association announced that the proposal has been formally submitted to CAF and argued that expanding the tournaments would reward the continued progress of African football while giving more clubs the opportunity to compete at the continental level.
