Rabat — Moroccan security services in the Guerguerat border post, south of the city of Dakhla, thwarted an international drug trafficking attempt, seizing 53 kilograms and 630 grams of cocaine.
A security source said a joint security operation between the national police and customs at the order post succeeded in foiling the international drug trafficking attempt on Saturday evening.
The drug shipment was carefully concealed in cavities within the floor of an international freight truck bearing foreign license plates.
The vehicle came from a sub-Saharan African country and was abandoned by its driver inside the border post, the security sources added.
Police opened an investigation to identify all suspects involved and to uncover the networks connected to the drug trafficking attempt
The operation is part of Morocco’s efforts to address drug trafficking and organized crime.
Throughout the years, Morocco has made several major drug busts, arresting individuals and seizing large quantities of drugs.
Last year, Morocco’s police handled 92,346 drug-related cases, arresting 119,692 individuals. Of those arrested, 287 were foreign nationals, the report detailed.
Security services also seized 123 tons and 971 kilograms of cannabis in different operations across the country, as well as 1.9 tons of cocaine, 16.5 kilograms of heroin, and over 1.4 million psychotropic substances.
