Disturbing new details have emerged about the attack on Lamine Yamal’s father, Mounir Nasraoui, who was stabbed several times during an altercation in August 2024 in the Rocafonda neighbourhood of Mataró, Catalonia, the same area where the Barcelona winger grew up.
According to La Vanguardia, Nasraoui, 39, suffered three “life-threatening” stab wounds and was rushed to Can Ruti Hospital in Badalona, where he spent several days in intensive care.
Witnesses described a violent scene. One said: “They wanted to kill him. One was carrying a knife. He started as if he were an animal. He was going to kill him.” Another told investigators: “Mounir has run, he [the one with the knife] comes after him and stabs him. He sticks it two or three times in the chest and side.”
The attack reportedly began after water was thrown at Nasraoui from a nearby building. Hours later, an argument escalated into violence in a nearby car park. Nasraoui claimed he acted in self-defence after being cornered.
Despite being the victim of the stabbing, Nasraoui appeared in a Mataró court as a defendant, as the alleged attackers claimed they were acting in self-defence after taking a knife from one of his friends. Four men were arrested, with the main suspect later released while changing legal representation. The case remains under investigation.
The attack has drawn renewed attention to Yamal’s personal life and the pressures surrounding his family. The 18-year-old, who wears Barcelona’s No.10 shirt, has started the season brightly with two goals and four assists in La Liga, but has recently been sidelined with a groin injury.
