Rabat – Morocco’s National Center for Energy, Sciences and Nuclear Techniques (CNESTEN) has signed a cooperation agreement with the Belgian Nuclear Research Center (SCK CEN) to advance collaboration in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
The agreement was concluded on the sidelines of the World Nuclear Exhibition for Civilian Nuclear Energy, held in Paris from November 4 to 6.
Hamid Marah, Director General of CNESTEN, and Peter Baeten and Derrick-Philippe Gosselin, Director General and President of Belgium’s SCK CEN, signed the agreement, according to a statement from CNESTEN.
The agreement seeks to bolster the exchange of expertise, enhance scientific research, and promote education and training to boost regional and international capacities in the use of research reactors.
The two institutions are both recognized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as International Centres based on Research Reactors (ICERRs).
This partnership reflects Morocco’s growing engagement in global nuclear cooperation frameworks and its ongoing efforts to leverage nuclear applications for research, medicine, energy, and sustainable development, added the CNESTEN statement.
The country has made significant progress in the safe use of the nuclear sector.
In September, Morocco was elected vice-president of the IAEA Board of Governors for the 2025-2026 term, represented by Azzedine Farhane, Morocco’s ambassador and permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna.
