Mohammedia – ChatGPT is stepping towards turning into a shared online workspace with the introduction of a new group chat feature, currently being tested in a few locations.
The company explains that the new feature aims to ensure that individuals and the AI are able to work together using a single chat room, whether individuals are planning a straightforward task or a complex project.
This is the start of a new trend that aims to turn ChatGPT into a shared online environment that is more interactive than a one-on-one AI assistant.
The pilot will be launched on both mobile and the web for registered users of the service in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.Â
Anyone on a Free, Go, Plus, or Pro plan in those regions can start or join a group chat. Each of these group chats will be completely separate and unrelated to one’s personal chats and will not utilize the service’s personal user memory. In turn, that memory will not be updated with information derived from the group conversation.
After entering a group conversation, individuals are able to bring other people into the conversation through a link with a capacity of up to twenty people.

If a person is added to a conversation that already exists, ChatGPT will immediately make a duplicate conversation for the group, thus ensuring the privacy of the original conversation. New individuals joining the conversation are required to create a profile showing their name, username, and picture so that people know whom to talk to.
The experience is essentially a mirror of a standard ChatGPT conversation, but with the incorporation of new social interactions. The AI tries to resonate with the way a group discussion follows rhythm, but only answers if it feels it’s needed.
The AI can be invoked directly by name. And it is capable of responding to messages using emojis and profile pictures of the members when creating personalized pictures.
The file upload, search, and picture functions are enabled, and the AI-powered answers are generated using the GPT-5.1 Auto model. The conversation rate is limited only if the AI is the one responding, not if the conversation is between the members of the chat group.
This feature was developed with the intention of being moderate and protecting minors, according to OpenAI. With a user below the age of eighteen within a group conversation, the model limits all of them to sensitive material. Parents are also able to turn the feature off by using parental controls.
The company introduces this pilot project as the first step of a bigger plan that could reach more locations and involve more flexibility concerning the management of memory and custom instructions within groups.
