Rabat – An emergency meeting was held today at the headquarters of the Safi provincial prefecture following the floods and exceptional rainfall that hit the city, resulting in deaths and significant material damage.

Chaired by the Wali of the Marrakech-Safi region and Governor of the Marrakech prefecture, Khatib El Hebil, the meeting brought together the Governor of the Safi province, Mohammed Fettah, the president of the Regional Council, representatives of regional security authorities, and officials from relevant decentralized services.

The discussions reviewed the overall situation in the city in the aftermath of the floods, with a focus on their impact and immediate repercussions across affected areas.

Discussions also focused on assessing the damage recorded across the neighborhoods affected by the violent runoff caused by torrential rain, as well as identifying urgent measures to limit the impact of the floods and ensure the safety of residents.

Authorities examined response priorities, coordination mechanisms, and immediate needs on the ground.

Participants stressed the full mobilization of human and logistical resources and the need for strengthened coordination among all stakeholders.

They also emphasized the continuation of a maximum alert status to manage the consequences of the floods, address their effects swiftly, and provide appropriate support and assistance to affected populations.

According to figures provided by local authorities, the death toll from the storm rainfall that struck on Sunday evening, triggering sudden and severe flash floods, has risen to 37.

Operations by public authorities, civil protection services, law enforcement, and other involved actors remain ongoing, with search, rescue, and assistance efforts continuing for residents impacted by the disaster.
