Rabat – Bahrain has recalled its ambassador to Tel Aviv and suspended economic ties with Israel, the Bahraini parliament announced on Thursday.

A statement published on the Council of Representatives’ website, confirmed that the Israeli ambassador to Bahrain has left the country, while the Gulf state recalled its ambassador to Tel Aviv..

“[The decision] comes to confirm the historic stance of Bahrain in supporting the Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of the brotherly Palestinian people,” the statement added.

The statement added that “with the continuing war, military operation, and constant Israeli escalation,” the Council is demanding more decisions and measures to preserve innocent civilian lives in Gaza and other Palestinian territories.

The gulf state established diplomatic ties with Israel in 2020 as part of the US-brokered Abraham Accords.

Bahrain is not the first country to have frozen diplomatic relations with Israel as the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) intensify their genocidal campaign in the Gaza Strip.

Several South American countries took a series of diplomatic moves to protest the continuing airstrike, with Bolivia completely severing ties with Tel Aviv, a decision which drew criticism from Israel’s government.

Chile and Colombia both recalled their ambassadors on Tuesday evening and criticized Israel’s targeting of civilians in Gaza.

“It’s called genocide; they’re doing it to remove the Palestinian people from Gaza and take it over,” Colombian President Gustavo Petro wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “The head of the state committing this genocide is a criminal against humanity.”

Argentina and Brazil have also upped their criticism of the Israeli occupation forces, with Brazilian President Lula da Silva condemning the targeting of children on X.

Israel’s unrelenting offensive in the Gaza Strip, which began in early October, has killed at least 8,800 people, including at least over 3,500 children.
