Rabat – Morocco is set to experience unstable weather conditions from the end of this week until early next week, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology.
A strong low-pressure system is expected to bring heavy rain, thunderstorms, snowfall, strong winds, and rough sea conditions to several regions of the country, coinciding with the school holidays.
The National Road Safety Agency (NARSA) has called on all road users to exercise maximum caution and postpone non-essential travel until weather conditions improve. The agency warned that bad weather significantly increases the risk of road accidents.
NARSA urged drivers, especially public transport bus drivers and freight truck drivers, to closely follow weather updates and plan their journeys carefully.
The agency stressed the importance of respecting traffic laws and ensuring vehicles are in good mechanical condition. It advised drivers to check brakes, tires, lights, windshield wipers, and other safety equipment before traveling.
It also highlighted the dangers of fatigue, noting that tired drivers are more likely to lose concentration and misjudge speed and distance. It urged motorists to rest well before driving, reduce speed according to road and weather conditions, and maintain a safe distance between vehicles, particularly on highways and national roads.
The agency’s statement drew special attention to driving at night or in poor visibility caused by fog or heavy rain. It urged drivers to be cautious on bridges and flooded roads, avoid sudden maneuvers, and remain vigilant toward pedestrians and cyclists.
Weather forecasts indicate heavy rain and thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday in areas such as Tangier, the Loukkos region, the Rif, the Atlas Mountains, Saiss, and northern and central plains. Snowfall is expected in mountainous areas above 1,200 meters, while strong winds may affect several regions.
Authorities warned of very rough conditions at sea, with waves reaching up to eight meters along the Atlantic coast between Tangier and Agadir. Maritime activities are strongly discouraged.
Authorities are urging citizens to follow safety advice, monitor official weather bulletins, and cooperate with instructions from local authorities to protect lives and reduce risks during this period of severe weather.
