Rabat – The president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) Fouzi Lekjaa said that Morocco’s hosting of the 2029 Club World Cup, alongside Spain and Portugal, will prove the three countries’ readiness to host the 2030 World Cup.

“In the year 2029, Morocco, Spain, and Portugal will jointly organize the Club World Cup not only to test but to confirm our readiness a year before hosting the World Cup,” he said in an interview with Asharq Sports.

Lekjaa, who chairs the organizing committee for the 2030 World Cup, noted that it has been customary for FIFA to award the Club World Cup hosting rights to the country set to host the upcoming World Cup.

The trio will host the tournament in its new format, featuring 32 countries instead of seven, which FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced during the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Lekjaa said that the hosting of the event will “serve as a real test once we have completed the preparation of our national stadiums and the construction of the grand stadium in Ben Slimane.”

The FIFA Council announced last week the awarding of the 2030 World Cup hosting rights to Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, saying that the tournament will unite two continents in celebrating football.

Like the Club World Cup, the World Cup will see an expanded format starting from 2026, featuring 48 teams instead of 32.

The 2030 World Cup will thus include 104 matches, three of which will be hosted in Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first-ever World Cup.
