Agadir – Abdellatif Ouahbi, Morocco’s Minister of Justice, welcomed the newly appointed European Union Ambassador, Dimiter Tzantchev, for a courtesy visit focused on reinforcing cooperation and consolidating the partnership between Morocco and the EU.
During the meeting, Minister Ouahbi extended his best wishes to Ambassador Tzantchev and emphasized the ministry’s commitment to continued coordination and dialogue with the European Union across a range of legal and judicial matters.
The discussions highlighted opportunities to strengthen cooperation in many areas, including modernizing the judicial system, sharing expertise and best practices, and developing institutional capacities.
Morocco and EU long lasting corporation
Earlier, Morocco and the European Union celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Association Agreement, signed on February 26, 1996 – a milestone that laid the foundation for a solid and lasting partnership.
Far beyond a legal framework, the agreement “laid the foundations for a solid strategic partnership that now serves as an example in the Southern Neighbourhood,” according to an EU statement.
Over three decades, the relationship has evolved into a comprehensive collaboration encompassing economic, social, and political dimensions.
“Our robust cooperation, based on mutually beneficial exchanges in various fields, has allowed us to accumulate considerable achievements in service of our common interests,” the EU statement noted.
This partnership extends to major regional and global issues, including climate change, energy security, migration, and regional stability in North Africa.
During the latest Association Council meeting in Brussels on January 29, EU officials emphasized the depth of this shared commitment.
“For the European Union, Morocco is an essential and key strategic partner in our southern neighborhood,” EU officials emphasized.
Both sides pledged to continue building this partnership as a driver of stability, shared prosperity, and opportunities across the Mediterranean.
In 2024, trade between Morocco and the EU reached over MAD 649 billion ($64.9 billion), a fivefold increase since 2000, generating growth, employment, and stability for both partners.
The EU statement highlighted the generational impact of these ties, noting that “a generation has grown up with a Europe and a Morocco closer than ever, bound by human, academic, cultural, and economic exchanges.”
The relationship is further strengthened by initiatives such as the recently adopted Pact for the Mediterranean, which positions Morocco as a leading regional actor in shared efforts to address economic, climatic, and security challenges.
