Rabat – Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) is forecasting snowfall for several provinces next week.
In a weather alert today, the weather office said snowfall will be at elevations starting from 2,000 meters on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The affected provinces are Ouarzazate, Tinghir, Al Haouz, and Azilal, starting Tuesday at 12 p.m.
Since mid-November of last year, Morocco has witnessed cold weather with snow and heavy rainfall that caused floods in several provinces.
Morocco declared several regions as disaster zones, evacuating tens of thousands of at-risk citizens to safe regions.
It wasn’t until recently that authorities allowed citizens to return to their towns, especially in Ksar El Kebir and other regions affected by floods due to rising water in dams across Morocco.
Although the rainfall was good news for the country’s water reserves, it also presented a challenge for Morocco’s infrastructure and agriculture, as many farmers complained about the large downpour affecting their crops.
Official data from the government show that Morocco’s dams reached 70.6% of their total capacity by Wednesday this week. Morocco also boasts an estimated 12.2 billion cubic meters of water in its main reservoirs.
In Taounate province, the Al Wahda Dam filled to 85%, and the Idriss I Dam reached 86%.
In Larache, the Dar Khrofa Dam reached full capacity, while the Bin El Ouidane Dam in Azilal holds 77% of its total volume.
From February through mid-March, the weather started to stabilize across the country, although recent days show gray skies, showing potential upcoming rainfall.
Weather reports suggest rainfall could hit several provinces this coming weekend, which could mark the end of Ramadan in Morocco.
