A tragic incident marred the official reopening of the Estadio Azteca, recently renamed Estadio Banorte, on Saturday. The young man, identified as Adrián G., 27 years old, lost his life in a fatal fall just before the kickoff of the friendly match between Mexico and Portugal.

According to security reports, the man was reportedly intoxicated at the time. He attempted to move from the second-level VIP section to the first level by climbing the outside of the structure before falling all the way to the ground. Emergency services and investigative police responded immediately, but the fan was pronounced dead at the scene.

The event had been planned as a celebration of the stadium’s renovations ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match itself went ahead as scheduled and ended in a 0–0 draw, but the mood among fans and officials was understandably somber. Some noted confusing logistics and access issues, raising questions about safety protocols during the reopening.

The Estadio Azteca holds historic significance, having previously hosted the 1970 and 1986 World Cup finals, and is planned to be an important venue for the 2026 tournament.

The Mexico City prosecutor’s office (Fiscalía CDMX) has launched a thorough investigation. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and conducting an autopsy to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the fall and the victim’s physical condition at the time.
