US State Department Commends Morocco’s Rich History of Religious Tolerance

Rabat – The US State Department hailed Morocco for its rich history of religious tolerance in a September 27 statement.

Issued by the Office of the Special Envoy of the United States to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism, the report emphasized Morocco’s long-standing commitment to fostering an environment of acceptance and harmony among diverse religious communities.

“Religious tolerance is a hallmark of Morocco’s history, from the reception of refugees fleeing the Iberian Peninsula in the late fifteenth century, to the efforts of the late King Mohammed V to protect Jews during World War II,” the statement said, underlining Morocco’s enduring tradition of religious inclusivity, extending over centuries.

The statement cited the House of Memory in Essaouira as an example of Moroccan tolerance, recalling that the house’s mission is to preserve Morocco’s ancient Jewish heritage through the restoration of a historic synagogue.

It further described the iconic House of Morocco as a testament to Morocco’s goodwill toward its Jewish citizens and its commitment to multiculturalism. The site is a symbol of Morocco’s commitment to preserving its rich Jewish heritage, the report noted.

Also mentioned in the report is the work of the Maimouna organization.

Founded by a group of young Muslim students, Maimouna is dedicated to educating Moroccan youth about the country’s extensive Jewish cultural history, spanning thousands of years.

The organization’s core activities revolve around educational programs designed to promote interfaith dialogue and encourage multiculturalism in Morocco. According to the State Department’s report, Maimouna’s efforts exemplify Morocco’s commitment to fostering understanding and unity among diverse religious communities.

In addition to hailing Morocco’s religious tolerance, the report took a comprehensive look at over 40 global initiatives aimed at promoting religious tolerance and combating anti-Semitism in the world. It underscored the importance of fostering a culture of acceptance and respect for religious diversity worldwide.
