Tetouan – Chinese carmaker Seres has stirred debate in the automotive sector after filing a patent for a concealed toilet system built into a car’s interior.

While unconventional, the idea reflects a broader change in how manufacturers approach design and user comfort.

According to Aljazeera, the concept moves beyond traditional areas of competition such as engine performance or autonomous driving.

Instead, it focuses on practical challenges faced by passengers, particularly during long trips or extended traffic delays.

Headquartered in Chongqing, Seres is a growing player in the electric and hybrid vehicle market.

Its strategic partnership with Huawei has strengthened its position, combining vehicle manufacturing with advanced digital systems.

The two companies have previously collaborated on the AITO brand, which emphasizes smart mobility solutions.

According to the patent, the toilet unit is discreetly integrated beneath the front passenger seat.

It can be deployed through a sliding mechanism and activated either manually or via voice commands, allowing the cabin to maintain a clean and premium appearance when not in use.

The system also addresses hygiene concerns. It includes ventilation to direct odors outside the vehicle and a heating function designed to dry solid waste and reduce liquid volume.

Waste is stored in a detachable tank that can be removed and emptied when needed.

For safety reasons, the feature is not intended for use while the vehicle is moving.

Instead, it targets situations such as long delays in traffic, roadside emergencies, or outdoor travel scenarios like camping.

In these cases, it could offer added convenience, particularly for families and elderly passengers.

Although portable travel toilets already exist on the market, Seres’ proposal introduces a more integrated solution.

It suggests that car design is evolving toward a more complete in-cabin experience.

Whether the concept reaches production or not, it highlights how automakers are beginning to rethink the car as more than just a means of transport, placing greater emphasis on everyday comfort inside the vehicle.
