Sundowns and Moroccan Clubs: Rivalry Defined by Fine Margins

From Wydad to Raja to FAR Rabat, Sundowns’ encounters with Moroccan clubs have been tight, tactical, and decided by moments rather than dominance.

Rabat – Mamelodi Sundowns have become one of Africa’s most consistent clubs, reaching the latter stages of the CAF Champions League year after year.

That consistency has repeatedly brought them into direct battles with Moroccan clubs

A history with Wydad

The rivalry with Wydad Casablanca remains the strongest example. In the 2016 final, Sundowns won 3‑0 at home before losing 1‑0 away, lifting the title on aggregate.

Three years later, Wydad knocked them out in the semi‑finals, winning 2‑1 over two legs. They met again in the semi‑final in 2023, with yet another tight contest ending 2‑1 to Wydad.

Each time, the margins were small. Sundowns had the structure and resources, but Wydad found ways to resist and advance.

Raja also tested them

Raja Casablanca added another chapter in the 2024‑25 group stage. Sundowns collected important points but never dominated.

They won one game, lost the other 1‑0 in Casablanca, and the balance remained even. Again, no clear superiority, just narrow results that reflected how difficult the Moroccan opposition can be.

FAR Rabat: the latest challenge

Now the focus shifts to FAR Rabat, who reached the final after eliminating RS Berkane. Sundowns beat Esperance 2‑0 on aggregate to book their place, setting up another Morocco-South Africa showdown.

Their recent meetings in the 2024‑25 group stage show the fine margins. Both games ended 1‑1, first in Rabat in December and then in Pretoria in January.

FAR topped the group with 10 points, one ahead of Sundowns. FAR have already shown they can match Sundowns physically, defend well, and stay competitive across 90 minutes.

Sundowns arrive with the calm of a team used to deep runs. CAF described their semi‑final win over Esperance as “disciplined and composed,” a testament to their ability to manage pressure.

FAR, meanwhile, bring momentum and belief, having already proven they can stand toe‑to‑toe with Sundowns.

All of which makes this tie a clash between two clubs who know each other well and have already shared balanced contests.
