Rabat – Upon the start of the new school year 2023-24 in Morocco, the Minister of National Education, Preschool, and Sports, Chakib Benmoussa, introduced in a press conference held on September 5 in Rabat a set of new adjustments to the Moroccan educational system.

Among the steps that would be taken into consideration at the start of the new academic year, as part of these adjustments is the aim is to enhance the quality of schooling while improving the performance and skills of teachers through support and training.

Following the government’s adoption of the new “unified status for teachers,” which allows for the merger of 143,000 academic personnel and offers long-awaited promotion chances, this new school year will bring “significant” adjustments for the teaching staff.

The minister added that teachers who have been performing admirably would also have the chance to advance to Scale 11 ranking.

In addition, some teachers will get an annual bonus of MAD 14,000 ($1,334) for a period of four years in appreciation of their dedication to the education of the younger generation. To further reward the teachers, additional allowances will be given as well.

To ensure more efficient, high-quality preparation for educators, the ministry is considering a thorough reform of the current paradigm for teacher training. This would include spreading out the study time across five years after earning a baccalaureate degree.

As part of the training, headmasters will learn about the “merged school project,” aimed at improving the quality of learning and the quality measure of teaching.

The recruitment exam will also be reviewed to promote careers, the minister announced, adding that a psycho-technical test will be used to  choose the most qualified candidates.

On December 8-9, a professional teachers’ forum, prepared by over 2,500 teachers, will be held for the first time. This event will aim to shed light on new teaching methods and innovations in the sector.
