Rabat – Morocco’s Minister of National Education, Preschool, and Sports, Chakib Benmoussa reiterated today the country’s commitment to continue strengthening English language teaching, especially in middle school.
Speaking during a press conference on Tuesday, Benmoussa marked the beginning of the school year by emphasizing his ministry’s full preparation to implement its plans of expanding the teaching of English in Moroccan middle schools over the next two academic years, SNRT news reported.
He noted that the inclusion of English education in the third year of middle school – ninth grade – had already been successfully implemented in previous years. However, he promised a more extensive effort to incorporate English into the curriculum.
One of the aspects of this plan is raising the number of students set to benefit from enhanced English language learning.
Benmoussa said that 28% of first-year students and 62% of second-year students in Moroccan middle schools will benefit from English language classes.
The move towards strengthening English language education is part of a nationwide strategy that the Ministry of Education promised to implement starting from the 2023/2024 academic year.
In May 2023, Benmoussa issued a memorandum to the directors of regional education and training academies, outlining plans for the gradual expansion of English language teaching across the country’s middle schools.
Morocco’s dedication to enhancing English language education is part of a broader trend seen in recent years. The country has increasingly recognized the global importance of the English language for communication, business, and academic purposes.
By expanding access to English education in its schools, Morocco is ensuring that its students are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
The Ministry of Education previously underlined that the plan aligns with the provisions of the Moroccan constitution, which emphasizes the importance of mastering the most widely spoken languages to better communicate and open up to the world.
