Rabat – Antonio Rudiger is negotiating an extended contract with Real Madrid as his current deal runs out at the end of this season.
Without an agreement, the German defender would leave as a free agent this summer.
The 33‑year‑old joined Madrid from Chelsea in 2022 and has since played more than 180 matches, winning eight trophies, including La Liga and the Champions League in 2024. His existing contract expires in June, and talks are ongoing.
Madrid’s policy for players over 30 is to offer only one‑year extensions, meaning Rudiger would likely be tied to the club until 2027 if he accepts.
Sources inside the dressing room believe he will stay, especially with Jose Mourinho expected to return as head coach next season. A resolution is expected within the next week.
Injury struggles
Rudiger’s season has been disrupted by hamstring and knee problems, limiting him to 18 league appearances and seven in the Champions League.
Madrid finished without silverware for the second year in a row, adding pressure on the squad and coaching staff.
Despite his setbacks, Rudiger remains valued for his leadership. Teammates pointed to his influence in a dressing room short on authority.
Younger players such as Endrick have spoken about his positive impact.
Madrid face uncertainty in defense. David Alaba is set to leave as a free agent, Eder Militão has struggled with injuries, and Raul Asencio has dipped in form.
Losing Rudiger would force the club into the market for another senior defender, a costly move at a time when finances are being carefully managed.
Analysts say Rudiger’s prime years may be behind him, but his experience and presence remain crucial.
He played through pain last season, even taking medication to train, showing commitment despite physical limits.
Rudiger has made 82 appearances for Germany and is expected to be named in their squad for this summer’s World Cup.
His future at Madrid will be decided soon, but whether he stays or leaves, the decision will shape the club’s defensive plans for the coming campaign.
