Rabat – A devastating fire has been raging since Friday evening in the pristine M’ghraoua forest in the Taza region.

Firefighters, both on the ground and in the air have been deployed to bring the fire under control.

The government response escalated as two Canadair firefighting aircraft and members of the Royal Armed Forces were also deployed to assist in the operation.

According to local media reports, the flames, fueled by high temperatures and relentless winds, have not only threatened the forest but also local residences close the forest. As of Saturday afternoon, the fire has devoured an estimated 100 hectares of forest.

Meanwhile, the authorities have initiated precautionary evacuations for residents of nearby neighborhoods.

The Taza fire is yet another incident of climate-induced wildfires in Morocco. On Sunday morning, authorities in Tangier announced that the blaze raging in the Cap Spartel Forest has been contained by 85%.

The fire was first reported on Thursday, around 6:00 p.m., originating within the “Donabo” locality in the Forest. Robust winds and challenging topography exacerbated the fire and made it challenging for firefighters.
