Rabat – Morocco has further consolidated its position in the global tomato market, outperforming Spain in export volumes for the fourth consecutive year and maintaining an advantage in export value for the second year in a row, according to a report by Spanish specialized media Hortoinfo based on UN COMTRADE data for 2025.

The findings confirm a clear shift in the agricultural balance between the two countries, highlighting the continued rise of Morocco’s agro-industrial sector and the steady decline of Spanish tomato exports.

According to the data, Morocco ranked as the world’s third-largest exporter of fresh and chilled tomatoes in 2025, shipping a total of 707.6 million kilograms and capturing 9.6% of global market share. Over the past decade, Moroccan tomato exports have increased by nearly 35%, reflecting sustained growth in production and international competitiveness.

Once a leading European exporter, Spain continued its downward trajectory. Now ranked fourth globally since being overtaken by Morocco in 2022, Spain exported 537.4 million kilograms in 2025, representing 7.3% of the global market. Over the past ten years, Spanish export volumes have fallen by around 41%.

Beyond volumes, Morocco also maintained its lead in export revenue for the second consecutive year, generating 1,157 million MAD ($1.13 billion) in 2025, compared to Spain’s 1,025 million MAD ($1.00 billion). This confirms the growing financial strength of Morocco’s agricultural exports despite competitive price differences.

The average export price of Moroccan tomatoes stood at MAD 18 per kg ( $1.80 per kg), lower than Spain’s MAD 20.9 per kg ($2.10 per kg).

On the global stage, Mexico remains the dominant exporter, with nearly 1.987 billion kilograms shipped, accounting for 26.9% of global exports and generating more than MAD 25.1 billion ($2.57 billion) in revenue.

The Netherlands holds second place, surpassing one billion kilograms exported (1.044 billion kg), while maintaining the highest average export price at €1.97 per kilogram.

Turkey ranks fifth globally with just over 402 million kilograms exported, as Morocco continues to strengthen its position among the world’s leading tomato exporters, ahead of Spain in both volume and value.
