Rabat – Around 13,000 residents of the western German city of Duesseldorf were forced to evacuate their homes after a World War II-era bomb was unearthed during excavation work near the city zoo. The discovery has once again highlighted the persistent danger posed by unexploded ordnance that lingers beneath the ground in various parts of the country.
The evacuation was prompted by the finding of a one-ton US-made bomb, believed to date back to the Second World War. Authorities swiftly moved into action to ensure the safety of the affected residents. The local fire brigade and emergency services coordinated the evacuation effort, providing shelter at a nearby school while experts worked to defuse the hazardous device.
Long-distance train services were disrupted as a result of the discovery, and several local bus and tram lines were temporarily halted to ensure the safety of commuters and residents. The defusal operation was scheduled to take place overnight, with experts working meticulously to neutralize the bomb’s potential danger.
Unearthing unexploded bombs from WWII has become an unsettling reality in Germany, even more than seven decades after the war’s end. Construction sites and excavation projects often lead to the discovery of these hazardous relics, posing significant challenges to urban development and infrastructure projects. The risk associated with these wartime remnants continues to demand careful coordination and specialized expertise.

Dusseldorf’s predicament is not unique. In 2020, a similar incident in Frankfurt saw 13,000 people evacuated when a British bomb of comparable size was discovered during construction work. The incident serves as a reminder of the widespread contamination still present in many German cities, requiring ongoing vigilance and precautionary measures to prevent potential disasters.
Unfortunately, not all encounters with these WWII-era relics end without incident. In December 2021, a bomb of similar origin exploded at a construction site in Munich, resulting in injuries to four individuals. This tragic incident underscored the importance of swift and safe handling when dealing with unexploded ordnance.
