Rabat – France continues to grapple with a wave of protests and unrest as outrage continues to spread over the fatal police shooting and killing of a 17-year-old teenager of Algerian and Moroccan descent.

Despite government appeals for calm and an increased police presence, the demonstrations intensified Thursday night, with protesters taking to the streets in major cities across the country.

The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday morning in Nanterre, a suburb located on the western outskirts of Paris. According to police reports, officers approached a Mercedes vehicle for a routine check, during which one officer positioned himself in front of the car to halt it.

Allegedly, the driver accelerated towards the officer, prompting the officer to fire a shot that tragically struck the young man in the chest.

However, a video posted on social media contradicts the police officer’s account, showing the vehicle at a standstill while being checked by two police officers.

One of the officers can be seen aiming his weapon at the victim through the driver’s window and as the car began to move again, the officer opened fire.

The teenager’s death has sparked widespread outrage, fueling long-standing criticism about police brutality and systemic racism within France’s law enforcement.

Demonstrators have taken to the streets across the country to express their frustration. They held a march held in memory of the victim in Nanterre, voicing their demands for accountability and justice.

The French government has responded to the increasing unrest by deploying 40,000 police officers across the country to deescalate the riots, Reuters reported. Despite these efforts, the protests have continued and even intensified in major cities such as Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Pau, Toulouse, and Lille.

The protests have taken a violent turn in some instances, with reports of hundreds of arrests and clashes between demonstrators and the police, as well as incidents of arson and vandalism. Symbolic buildings, including town halls, schools, and police stations, have been targeted.

France’s Interior Minister Gerald Darmani said today that authorities made a total of 667 arrests last night.

In response to the mounting crisis, France’s President Emmanuel Macron has cut short a trip to Brussels, where he was attending a European Union summit, to hold a “crisis meeting” on Friday, AFP reported.

Meanwhile, the Paris prosecutor has initiated a formal investigation into the officer involved in the shooting, placing him under investigation for voluntary homicide, according to reuters.
