Rabat – Morocco continues to attract millions of tourists, as new data from the Ministry of Tourism confirmed that  5.1 million tourists visited the country as of the end of May 2023.

The number represents a  growth rate of 20 % compared to the same period in the year 2019, when the tourism sector witnessed a milestone prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ministry stressed that  May alone was marked by a record growth of 55% compared to 2019, with an influx of 1.1 million tourists.

The ministry attributed the development to a surge of tourists from several countries, including Spain with 46% of the influx, followed by Britain with 29%, Israel, and Italy.

“We are very proud of these achievements, which came as a result of the emergency plan of two billion dirhams that the government set to support professionals in 2022 and enable them, in particular, to qualify the hotel offer, and the many measures that we have taken,” she said.

The measures also include means to promote Moroccan destinations.

The minister also attributed the achievement to the national football team, which contributed to promoting Morocco during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Several reports highlighted the positive contribution of Morocco’s Atlas Lions in improving the country’s tourism industry.

In April, Dubai-based media intelligence provider CARMA said that Google search related to Morocco increased by 273% following the World Cup.

Wikipedia page visits for Morocco increased by 453%, while social media posts about the North African country increased by 764% reaching
a total of 12.1 million posts.
