Agadir – Morocco’s Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit held talks on Friday with Mauritania’s Minister of Interior, Decentralization and Local Development, Mohamed Ahmed Ould Mohamed Lemine, to strengthen bilateral cooperation on security, migration, and decentralized governance.
The meeting took place at the Ministry of the Interior headquarters in Rabat during the Mauritanian minister’s official visit to Morocco on July 17-18, according to Morocco’s Interior Ministry.
Focus on security and migration cooperation
The ministry said the talks were held within the framework of the longstanding brotherly relations between Morocco and Mauritania, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.
Both ministers praised the strong ties between the two neighboring countries and reaffirmed their shared commitment to further strengthening cooperation between their respective ministries in line with the broader strategic partnership between Rabat and Nouakchott.
The discussions covered several issues of mutual interest, with particular emphasis on security cooperation, migration management, and decentralized cooperation.
The two officials reviewed the ongoing collaborative efforts between their ministries and explored ways to further develop joint initiatives in these priority areas.
Commitment to stronger bilateral coordination
Laftit and Ould Mohamed Lemine agreed to reinforce bilateral cooperation across areas falling under the responsibility of their ministries while enhancing coordination mechanisms on issues of common interest.
The Interior Ministry said the visit reflects the positive momentum in Morocco-Mauritania relations and demonstrates the two governments’ determination to deepen cooperation in areas under the ministries’ jurisdiction while strengthening ties in a spirit of brotherhood and complementarity.
