Rabat – The Tangier-manufactured Dacia Sandero was crowned Europe’s best-selling car  in April 2023 with over 18,000 units sold, according to new data by automotive business intelligence solutions and services provider JATO Dynamics.

With sales reaching 18,000 units, the Dacia Sandero outperformed its competitors, boasting a substantial 44% increase in sales.

The JATO Dynamics report noted that the Sandero emerged as the most-registered car in Belgium and Ireland, while securing the second spot in Portugal and Spain.

The popularity of the Sandero contributed significantly to Dacia’s overall success, as the brand witnessed a remarkable 147% surge in registrations of the Jogger model, resulting in a total volume increase of 44%.

Among the other top-selling models in Europe during April 2023 were the Volkswagen T-Roc, which recorded 16,746 unit sales, followed closely by the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa with 16,578 units and the Renault Clio with more than 15,000 units.

Other best-sellers included the Peugeot 208, Fiat/Abarth 500, Toyota Yaris Cross, VW Golf, and Dacia Duster.

Further down the ranking, the Tesla Model Y occupied the 17th position with 10,600 registered units, retaining its position as the most registered vehicle year-to-date.

Produced by French multinational automobile manufacturer Renault, the Dacia Sandero was initially produced at the Renault Dacia plant in Mioveni but was moved to the Moroccan plants in Tangier and Casablanca in 2020.

The Renault Group plant in Tangier recently celebrated reaching a production milestone of 2.5 million vehicles since its inauguration in 2012.

Describing the Tangier facility as a zero carbon and zero industrial liquid emissions industrial site, Renault emphasized its commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices.

The plant currently produces a range of vehicles, including the Dacia Lodgy, Dacia Sandero, Sandero Stepway, and Renault Express cars.

In March 2023, the Renault Group announced that the Tangier plant would begin production of the Dacia Jogger in the second quarter of 2024.

The new line of production is expected to produce up to 120,000 vehicles and marks a precedent for Morocco in the manufacturing of hybrid cars.
