Ghana Renews Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara

Rabat – Ghana has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the only realistic basis to solve the dispute over Western Sahara.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, reiterated his country’s position in a joint communique issued following his talks with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, on Tuesday in Accra.

In the statement, Ghana welcomed UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which also defines the Moroccan autonomy plan as a genuine political framework to end the dispute over Western Sahara.

The UN Security Council adopted the resolution last year in October, marking a historic milestone as Morocco’s position continues to generate more support in favor of the autonomy plan.

Ghana continues to support this momentum, while also backing efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his envoy in facilitating and leading negotiations based on the Moroccan plan.

Bourita visited Ghana on Tuesday as part of his mission to co-chair the second session of the Morocco-Ghana cooperation commission with his Ghanaian counterpart.

President of Ghana John Dramani Mahama received Bourita on the sidelines of the commission’s meeting, conveying his fraternal greetings to King Mohammed VI.

In the meeting, he also expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved between the two countries since King Mohammed VI’s visit to Ghana in February 2017.

Morocco’s ambassador to the UN, Omar Hilale, has recently said that 130 countries support the Moroccan Autonomy Plan.

Beyond Africa, around 30 European countries along with more than two-thirds of UN member states across all regions of the world actively support the Moroccan position.
