Casablanca – 28 people were killed, and 2,806 others were injured, including 121 seriously, in 2,066 traffic accidents recorded in Morocco’s urban areas between August 17 and 23, according to the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
That means an average of four people died every day during the seven-day period. The figure also comes just after another heavy weekly toll. Between August 10 and 16, 31 people were killed and 2,876 were injured in 2,073 urban traffic accidents, according to DGSN figures.
Taken together, the two weekly reports account for 59 deaths and 5,682 injuries in urban traffic accidents over 14 days only.
For the latest week, the DGSN said the accidents were mainly linked to driver inattention, failure to give way, pedestrian inattention, loss of vehicle control and speeding.
Other causes included unauthorized changes of direction, failure to keep a safe distance, driving on the left, failing to use turn signals, ignoring stop signs and red lights, improper overtaking, drunk driving and driving against traffic.
Traffic enforcement also remained extensive. Police recorded 53,295 violations, issued 8,398 reports for referral to the Public Prosecutor’s Office and collected 44,897 settlement fines. The fines brought in 9.74 million dirhams.
Authorities also impounded 5,531 vehicles, seized 8,398 documents and removed 636 vehicles from circulation.
