Rabat – Morocco international Sofyan Amrabat has announced that he will make himself unavailable for selection for the national team while the current head coach remains in charge.
In a statement posted on his Instagram account, Amrabat described the decision as a difficult one but said he no longer feels able to continue representing Morocco under the current coaching setup.
“I am therefore making myself unavailable for selection while he remains in charge,” Amrabat wrote.
The 30-year-old midfielder, however, made clear that his decision does not amount to an international retirement.
“I am not retiring from international football, and I am not closing the door on representing Morocco again,” he said.
Amrabat also chose not to reveal the reasons behind his decision, saying he preferred to keep them private out of respect for the national team and everyone involved.
“Representing Morocco has been the greatest honour of my career,” Amrabat wrote, recalling his first call-up 12 years ago. He added that his love for Morocco and the national team “will never change.”
History with Morocco
Amrabat has been an important figure for Morocco over the past decade, most notably during the Atlas Lions’ historic run to the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finals.
He also featured for Morocco at the 2026 World Cup, although his role was more limited during the tournament. His latest appearance came against France in the quarter-final on July 9, when he came on as a substitute in Morocco’s 2-0 defeat.
The midfielder recently completed a move to Ajax after leaving Fenerbahçe as a free agent.
For now, Amrabat’s statement means he will not be available for Morocco while the current coach remains in charge. However, his wording leaves the door open for a return to the Atlas Lions in the future.
“I will remain the team’s biggest fan, supporting you with the same passion I have always shown on the pitch,” Amrabat said, while thanking Moroccan supporters for their love and support.
