Cristiano Ronaldo Explains Portugal Camp Exit, Insists International Career Is Not Over

Casablanca – Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence on his controversial departure from Portugal’s latest training camp, he pointed a finger at head coach Jorge Jesus for breaking his word while making clear that the dispute does not mark the end of his international career.

In a lengthy statement he shared on Tuesday, the Portugal captain gave his version of the events that led him to leave the squad before the Nations League match against Denmark, days after remaining an unused substitute against Norway.

Ronaldo said the disagreement was not about demanding minutes. According to the 41-year-old, he and Jesus had previously agreed on a plan for managing his involvement with the national team, taking his fitness and recovery into account.

That understanding began to unravel during the Norway game, Ronaldo said. Despite not initially expecting to feature, he was approached on matchday and asked whether he would be able to play around 30 minutes. Ronaldo agreed and began warming up from halftime, but was never brought on.

He acknowledged that his reaction afterward was wrong, he apologized for failing to go over to the supporters following the match.

The dispute deepened during conversations that followed. Ronaldo said Jesus privately acknowledged that the situation had been mishandled and agreed to publicly clarify that the forward had never asked for guaranteed playing time. Ronaldo claimed the coach’s subsequent press conference did not reflect what they had discussed.

Ronaldo Says Trust With Jesus Broke Down

“It was the second time my word had been broken,” Ronaldo wrote, identifying that loss of trust as the central reason behind his decision to leave camp.

He added that he had already told both Jesus and Portuguese Football Federation President Pedro Proença that he would accept being left out of the national team altogether if that was what they wanted, provided they were honest with him.

“I respect the decision, and when they do not keep their word, I feel I have no place there,” Ronaldo said.

Ronaldo nevertheless accepted responsibility for walking out and apologized to his teammates.

“I should not have done it. The responsibility is mine alone,” he wrote.

He went further by saying the federation should impose whatever punishment it considers appropriate and argued that his status as captain should not earn him special treatment.

What Ronaldo firmly rejected, however, was the idea that the episode amounts to his international retirement.

He revealed that he had considered leaving Portugal after the 2026 World Cup before being persuaded to continue, and said farewell matches can come later. At the moment, he remains interested in competitive football.

“If I am physically fit, playing for my club and, hopefully, scoring goals,” Ronaldo wrote, he will remain available for Portugal once any suspension is served.

The statement therefore leaves Ronaldo’s immediate relationship with Jesus deeply fractured, but his relationship with the national team itself unfinished.
