Rabat – FIFA has chosen Moroccan referee Redouane Jiyed to be among the video assistant referees for the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup.

The world football governing body selected the renowned Moroccan referee to oversee the tournament which is expected to take place between February 1-11, in Rabat and Tangier, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium and Ibn Batouta Stadium.

FIFA’s list of appointed match officials features a total of 26 match officials, including six referees, 12 assistant referees and 8 video assistant referees, who have been chosen “in close cooperation with FIFA’s six Confederations,” FIFA said.

Algeria’s Mustapha Ghorbal is the main referee while Tunisia’s Khalil Hassani and Algeria’s Mokrane Gourari were named assistant referees for the tournament.

According to FIFA, the selected match officials will attend the preparatory seminar starting in Rabat on January 27.

FIFA also appointed Redouane Jiyed as a video match official for the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.

The FIFA Club World Cup will see the participation of Morocco’s Wydad Athletic Club, Spain’s Real Madrid, Brazil’s Flamengo, the US’ Seattle Sounders, Egypt’s Al Ahly, New Zealand’s Auckland City, and Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal.

The tournament’s draw put Morocco’s Wydad up against Saudi club Al Hilal in the tournament’s second round.
