Rabat – Manchester United is the latest elite European club to express its interest in Yassine Bounou, with the Moroccan goalkeeper continuing to attract the interest of high-caliber European clubs following his immense World Cup performances in Qatar.

Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag was already interested in securing Bounou’s services before the World Cup, but the Moroccan player’s consistent heroics in Qatar were the dealbreaker for Ten Hag, the website Elgoldigital reported on Sunday.

David de Gea, Manchester United’s current goalkeeper, is close to the end of his contract with the English club, Elgoldigital said. The website went on to add, “However, this [de Gea’s contract situation] is something that Manchester United is not interested in at the moment, because what is really important for them is the signing of Bounou.”

Sevilla, Bounou’s current club, has long been reluctant to sell their Moroccan keeper.

But the Spanish club is now willing to part ways with Bounou should one of his suitors pay an acceptable transfer fee, Elgoldigital reported, adding that the club’s asking price for the highly ranked Moroccan shot-stopper is currently set at €45 million.

While Bounou’s outstanding form at the Qatar World Cup is believed to have definitely put him on many elite clubs’ radars, the Moroccan keeper has been consistently brilliant for Sevilla in the past three seasons.

He was awarded the Zamora trophy last season, making the best goalkeeper of the top-tier Spanish league ahead of world-class competitors like Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois, Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak, and Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Bounou was also named one of the top goalkeepers in the world by France Football prior to the World Cup, and he was most recently nominated by FIFA this week for the 2023 Best Goalkeeper Award.
