Rabat – Morocco’s National Federation of Owners, Traders, and Managers of Service Stations in Morocco (FNPCGS) declared that the price of diesel is expected to increase by MAD 0.84 per liter starting tomorrow.
The source indicated that the gasoline prices will remain stable for now.
Diesel prices already increased two weeks ago by MAD 1.62, reaching almost MAD 16 per liter, while gasoline reached almost MAD 15 per liter, as its price went up by MAD 0.75.
According to the High Planning Commission (HCP), energy and food prices have reached their highest levels in over a year.
The HCP indicated that the consumer price index (CPI) increased by 1% in September compared to the previous month, adding that Morocco’s consumer prices have evolved at a rate not seen since 2008.
In a protest against the high prices of food and fuel, Moroccans used the hashtag #Degage_Akhannouch on social media last July.
Amid the socio-economic crisis, citizens asked to lower fuel prices to align with their purchasing power, calling on Aziz Akhannouch, the head of Morocco’s government, to step down.
“Akhannouch the Moroccan vampire. Stop sucking poor people’s blood,” one Twitter user said.
The government responded to the protests by citing price fluctuations happening on a global scale as the reason behind the price hikes. International price fluctuations have been caused by recent international developments, the most notable of which being the Russia-Ukraine war.
