Parliamentary Groups Call for Preservation of Purchasing Power in Morocco

Rabat – During a debate at the Committee on Finance and Economic Development in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, the chairmen of parliamentary groups said that the draft appropriation bill for the year 2023 (PLF-2023) should primarily preserve the purchasing power of Moroccans and further stimulate investment.

The development of the PLF comes in a difficult international environment marked by uncertainty, inflation, and economic recession, noted the majority groups during a meeting dedicated to the general discussion of the 2023 PLF.

They clarified that the government is aware of its responsibilities, especially in this difficult economic situation.

This PLF is part of the fulfillment of the commitments of the executive branch, led by the strengthening of the social state pillars, through the generalization of medical and social coverage to all citizens, added the majority groups.

They also said that this bill proposed measures with a social dimension, namely the increase in the budget of the Ministry of Health, and the improvement of public schools.

It also provides an improvement of public spending, support for middle-class households and populations in precarious situations, they continued.

The majority groups noted that the 2023 PLF also intends to preserve the purchasing power of citizens, through the allocation of MAD 26 billion ($2.4 billion) to the Compensation Fund and the creation of more jobs compared to last year.

The opposition groups said they were aware of the difficult situation in which this PLF was developed, but they highlighted that the 2023 PLF adopts the same guidelines of previous appropriation bills.

The measures taken by the government remain “insufficient” and have not had an impact on the daily lives of citizens, said the opposition groups.

They called for the adoption of concrete measures to address the soaring prices of consumer goods and fuel, protecting the purchasing power of the citizens.

Regarding the indicators cited in the 2023 PLF, the opposition groups said that they contain “contradictions”.

They are thus calling for the establishment of real tax fairness, and the fight against monopoly practices that deprive the state of important resources.
