Rabat Hosts Sixth Meeting of Morocco-Chile Political Consultation

Casablanca – The Ambassador Director-General of Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Fouad Yazourh, and the Vice-Minister of Foreign Relations of the Republic of Chile Ximena Fuentes co-chaired the 6th meeting of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade on October 17 in Rabat.

The aim of this joint meeting was to explore Morocco and Chile’s bilateral ties and ways to develop them in a variety of areas, particularly in the framework of mutually beneficial South-South cooperation.

During this encounter, the two diplomats reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to democratic consolidation processes, as well as to the protection and promotion of human rights, women’s rights, children’s rights, and gender equality, the statement noted.

Water scarcity was a central topic for discussion at the meeting, with both officials agreeing to share experience in seawater desalination, irrigation, and agriculture, the statement added.

This comes in addition to their agreement to prioritize cultural, academic, university, and scientific collaboration in bilateral, recognizing the richness of contacts between the two countries.

According to the statement, the two diplomats decided to expand the two countries’ cooperation to other areas of mutual interest, such as diplomatic institutes, national libraries, the Mohammed VI Cultural Center for Civilizational Dialogue, and cultural and academic institutions in both countries.

Regarding the economy, Moroccan and Chilean delegates committed to expand bilateral trade in tourism, logistics, renewable energy, green hydrogen, and water resources, among other sectors.

The two parties further agreed to address the multiple challenges facing the international community, including the fight against climate change, environmental protection and biodivesrity, illegal migration, and the fight against organized crime of human trafficking.

The next session of the Joint Commission between the two countries is set to be held in 2023, the joint statement concluded.
