Marrakech – Morocco’s National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) commissioned a new 400 kV extra-high voltage (EHV) power line on Sunday. The line connects the Chemaia substation, near Youssoufia, to the Médiouna substation on the outskirts of Casablanca.
The infrastructure stretches 274 kilometers and required an investment of MAD 529 million ($52.9 million). ONEE described the project as part of its broader program to modernize and secure the national electricity transmission network.
The new line is designed to strengthen electricity supply security around the Casablanca area and increase transit capacity across the grid. ONEE said the line constitutes a critical link in the national transmission network, which now extends over 30,700 km of high and extra-high voltage lines with a transformation capacity of 22,120 MVA.
Looking ahead, ONEE plans to expand the network to 37,000 km by 2030. The office also aims to raise its transformation capacity to 35,000 MVA over the same period. That expansion will involve the construction of new transmission lines and additional EHV substations.
Beyond grid reinforcement, the project plays a direct role in Morocco’s energy transition. The added capacity will support the large-scale integration of renewable energy sources, accompany major national infrastructure projects, and meet the country’s sustained growth in electricity demand.
