Rabat – Several Moroccan political parties and activists have come forward to condemn Israel’s latest attacks on the Gaza strip, with some calling on the Moroccan government to cut relations with the Jewish state.
The Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) said in a press release that it is following “with great anxiety and condemnation” the latest Israeli escalation.
The party noted it places all responsibility for casualties on Israel, adding that the international community has to come together to help and protect Palestinians, and “hold the criminals of this disproportionate war accountable.”
The conservative Justice and Development Party (PJD) also strongly condemned the attacks, releasing a statement where they urged the international community to “take its responsibility in combating the occupation.”
PJD’s press release also reaffirmed Morocco’s former ruling party’s commitment to support Palestinians. In particular, the party rejected Morocco’s re-establishment of relations with Israel, saying that it provides Israel with immunity and supports its “criminal, racist, and expansionist policies.”
On the civil front, the National Action Group for Palestine released a similar statement, mourning the people who had died so far in the attacks and condemning Israel’s actions.
The group also affirmed that Palestinians should retain the right to retaliate against Israel’s attacks. It condemned “the international silence and western complacency,” specifically calling out the American administration.
“We invite all the peoples of our Arab and Islamic Ummah to raise their level of support for the Palestinian people,” the statement continued.
Israel launched a new offensive on the Gaza strip on Friday, killing 15 people so far, including a five-year-old girl.
Israeli army representatives have said the operation will continue for at least one week, with retaliatory attacks from the strip’s resistance groups already having taken place.
Morocco re-established relations with Israel in late 2020, as part of the US brokered Abraham Accords, which included more Arab countries.
