Rabat – Morocco’s under-18 (U-18) football team defeated its Algerian counterpart on Tuesday, securing a 2-0 victory at the 2022 Mediterranean games held between June 26 and July 5 in Oran, Algeria.

Morocco played remarkably in its match against Algeria. Othmane Boukhriss scored the first goal in the 47th minute, while Abdellah Raihani delivered the team’s second goal in the 64th minute.

Morocco’s Lionceaux de l’Atlas lost 0-1 against the French team on Sunday, after Amine Messoussa scored the only goal of the game on a penalty. Messoussa, who is of Moroccan origin, once represented the Kingdom at the U17 level before joining Lille Olympique Sporting Club in June 2022.

The Moroccan squad now ranks second in Group A, after France, at the Group stage qualifications and will most likely qualify for the next round.

Algeria and Spain came third and fourth in the group qualifiers, respectively.

The national team will face Spain on June 30.

The Moroccan delegation at the Mediterranean games, which consists of 130 athletes participating in 15 sports, has collected several medals in various competitions.

Three Moroccan karatekas won bronze medals on Tuesday, while athlete Karima Ghariz earned the country’s fourth bronze in the pétanque, a sport that falls into the boules sport category.

Morocco’s Elliot Benchetrit qualified for the quarterfinals of the tennis tournament on the same day after defeating Malta’s Liam Delicata in two sets, 6-2 and 6-1.
