Casablanca – The Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), in partnership with the Phosboucraa Foundation, hosted the 2nd edition of the Laayoune International Forum on Biosaline Agriculture (LAFOBA2) from June 14 to 16, 2022.
The forum was held at the African Institute for Sustainable Agriculture Research (ASARI) in Foum El Oued, Laayoune.
Reflecting UM6P and Phosboucraa Foundation’s shared goal to provide persuasive solutions to the agriculture challenges, the aim of this forum was to address the rapid increase in soil salinity, as well as the difficulties of climate change on ecosystems, agriculture, and food security in Morocco and throughout the globe, UM6P said in a press release.
The forum brought together scholars and national and international professionals from 33 nations, as well as a variety of stakeholders interested in Saharan and saline concerns.

The forum began with a summary of recent efforts by the ASARI Research Institute since the forum’s first session in 2019, highlighting the success of introducing several salinity-tolerant crops and their influence on improving the living conditions of local farmers.
The event then resumed with a debate on the most recent scientific developments in soil salinity.
The discussion focused primarily on the potential for enhancing soil productivity in the face of rising climate change and the efforts to help farmers better comprehend the difficulties ahead.
The forum concluded with a series of recommendations and the publication of the top scientific articles by the forum’s publishing partners, MDPI and Plant.
In organizing such an event, stressed the press release, UM6P and the Phosboucraa Foundation hope to position the southern regions as hubs of knowledge and scientific research in the service of sustainable agriculture.
