Rabat  – Temperatures ranging between 39 and 45  degrees celsius (°C) are set to hit Moroccan provinces on Friday and Saturday.

Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) announced earlier today an orange level weather notice amid a nationwide heatwave.

The directorate reported that temperatures on Friday will range between 39 and 40°C in Guercif, Taounate, Ouezzane, Fes, Moulay Yakoub, Khouribga, Fqih Ben Salah, Beni Mellal, El Kalaa Sraghna.

Taroudant, Oujda, Tata, Zagora, Errachidia, Assa-Zag, Es-Semara, Aousserd and Oued Ed-Dahab will experience similar temperatures.

Temperatures will further skyrocket to reach between 39 and 44°C on Saturday. These temperatures are expected in the provinces of Oujda, Taroudant, Assa-Zag, Es-Semara, Agadir-Ida-Outanane, and Tata, according to recent weather forecasts.

Earlier this week, temperatures ranging between 43 and 46 °C were recorded in Ouezzane, Moulay Yaacoub, Taounate, Fez, Meknes, Khemisset, Sidi Kacem, Sidi Slimane, Beni Mellal, and Fqih Ben Salah.

As Morocco records high temperatures, its Northern neighbors across the Mediterranean are expected to experience a “punishing heat wave,” said the Washington Post.

The heat is forecasted to peak in France on Saturday, while Spain, Germany, Austria, and Poland are expected to “feel abnormally high temperatures for the next few days.”

With rising temperatures becoming a norm worldwide due to climate change, Europe’s annual death toll due to heat – the world’s highest at 100,000- is set to increase, while countries such as India are expected to experience a “deadly combination of heat and humidity.”
